Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Chamique Holdsclaw made sure the Detroit Shock's first victory would not come at the expense of the Washington Mystics. Holdsclaw had 24 points, including the go-ahead three-point play, and 11 rebounds as the Mystics dropped the Shock to 0-10 with a 75-67 triumph at the MCI Center. After Deanna Nolan's layup gave Detroit its last advantage at 64-62 with 4:44 remaining, Holdsclaw countered with a 14-foot jump shot and a free throw 18 seconds later to reclaim the lead for good. Holdsclaw added another jumper with 3:01 left to give the Mystics a three-point cushion before rookie Stacey Dales-Schuman scored the team's next five points to put away the game. Coco Miller had a career-high 15 points and rookie Asjha Jones chipped in 10 for Washington, which improved its Eastern Conference-best record to 7-1. With the victory, the Mystics matched their franchise record with a sixth consecutive triumph. Nolan and Wendy Palmer scored 16 pointa apiece for Detroit, which is off to the worst start in league history. The Shock shot just 38 percent (24-of-64) from the field while the Mystics connected on 48 percent (29-of-60).
